A Matter of Perspective

It’s Friday night in a town where Football is huge and an area where there is no shortage of “things to do on a Friday night”.  So what do about 300 area people do on this Friday night?  Sit an listen to four hour sermon at church.

That was my night tonight.  The picture at the forefront of this post was taken as I began the 1st worship session of the night.  You’ll notice the absence of the rest of the band.  There was no special lighting…just a whole group of believers and a guitar….ready to listen to four hours worth of a pastor diving into God’s Word.

I know, I know…there are pastors right now wondering “I have a hard enough time getting people in my church to sit still for a one hour sermon…much less four.  What gives?”  It’s a matter of perspective.

I realized something tonight.  Look again at the picture above.  At first glance – this is really downscaled compared to a typical Sunday.  In actuality, there is nothing downscale about it.  There is still focus lighting.  There is still a huge sound system being tweaked by a $200,000 Yamaha PM1D soundboard that was making my Taylor sound as great as it was.  There are still cushions in the chairs.  On second thought…there are still chairs.  As a matter of fact – there is still a public venue where we could all come together and enjoy these amenities.  It was almost an after-thought.

There are places where these “almost after-thoughts” are “un-thought-ofs”.  Watch.

You see, these people have so much more to worry about than what type building they come to.  They have to worry about whether or not they could be arrested, beaten, or even killed because they simply believe.  Yet, in these areas, people still manage to come together in the dead of night in secret and meet and study God’s Word…for hours and hours.  They can’t get enough of it.  It keeps them going.  It sustains them.  They wouldn’t blink at four hours…nor would they think that it was “too long for a sermon.”

And that is exactly why so many people gave up their night tonight to come in to our “Secret Church” and learn and grow and pray for four hours.  It is a matter of perspective.

Do I criticize the amenities that many churches have today?  No.  The perspective I hope you gain from my scattered thoughts this evening is simply this.  We have, to some extent, cheapened the value of the experience we have engaging God when we take it for granted that it is “just something we do on Sundays.”  My prayer tonight is that I would have the yearning and the longing to run after God just like those that are persecuted on a daily basis do.  I pray the same for each of you.

With love – serving with you,

Jason

Help Haiti LIVE

HELP HAITI LIVE – Help spread the word!

“Help Haiti Live” is a concert event that we truly believe in.  The concept was created out of the heart of Shaun Groves – and will be live streamed via his latest project site at www.helphaitilive.com .  You can click on the image above to go to the site now.  I encourage you to do so and bookmark it.

As of this current post, there are auction items posted on the website that you can bid one in support of Compassion International’s relief fund for Haiti.  The auctions include an autographed Gibson guitar and tickets to watch a live-taping of Hannah Montana.

I am personally asking the 12,000+ monthly supporters of this website to do what they can to support Compassion, Shaun, and (most importantly) the people of Haiti.  Visit the site today – and do what you can to support the cause.

WHAT IS “HELP HAITI LIVE”?

“Help Haiti Live” is a ticketed concert event taking place at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN, on February 27th, 2010 to benefit Compassion International’s Haiti disaster relief fund. The event will also be streamed live at HelpHaitiLive.com for those who cannot attend the concert in person.

100% of on-line donations through HelpHaitiLive.com will go to Compassion International’s Haiti disaster relief fund. 100% of net proceeds from ticket sales will go to Compassion International’s Haiti disaster relief fund.

“Help Haiti Live” is a production of Shaun Groves and  Synergy Production Group for Compassion International.

WHAT IS COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL?

Compassion International is a Christian not-for-profit ministry dedicated to the long-term holistic development of children in poverty.

Our ministry of Christian child development is two-fold:

  1. We work through the local church to provide child development programs that release children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty, enabling them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.
  2. We speak out on behalf of children in poverty, informing others of the needs and potential of children and motivating and equipping them to become increasingly involved in holistic child development.

HOW DOES MY DONATION HELP COMPASSION HELP HAITI?

Relief supplies (e.g., water, food, cooking items, hygiene kits, medical supplies, temporary shelter, blankets, etc.) are being delivered to Haiti through our staging area in Florida and our two supply warehouses in Haiti. They are being provided to over 15,000 children and their families.

Water purification tablets, tents and tarps, medical supplies – for our church partners, local hospitals and our medical team’s use – are being provided as well.

Rebuilding of homes and restoration of our church partners’ facilities will be handled as part of our future relief efforts.

Your donation continues this work for months to come.

IS MY CASH DONATION TO HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF EFFORTS APPLICABLE TO MY 2009 TAX RETURNS?

Yes. Charitable contributions made before March 1, 2010, in response to the Haiti earthquake can be claimed as itemized charitable deductions on your 2009 tax return instead of waiting to claim these on your 2010 tax return (see The House of Representatives bill H.R. 4462 passed 1/20/10).

As with any tax concern, please consult your own professional advisor to learn how a gift to Haiti relief bill will affect your tax situation.

HOW AND WHEN DID COMPASSION START?

Compassion began in the heart of one man moved by Korean War orphans in 1952. Reverend Everett Swanson was on a successful preaching tour in South Korea when he encountered the bitter poverty of Korea’s unwanted children. He knew he had to do something.

Upon his return to the United States, Everett established a program that allowed caring people to provide food, shelter, education, medical care and Christian training for Korean orphans. That program was, and remains, the foundation and core of Compassion International.

WHAT IS COMPASSION’S MISSION?

In response to the Great Commission, Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults.

WHERE DOES COMPASSION WORK?

Today Compassion works in 26 countries. In Africa, we work in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda. In Middle America, we work in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico. In South America, we work in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. In Asia, we work in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

DO CHILDREN HAVE TO BECOME CHRISTIANS TO RECEIVE HELP FROM COMPASSION?

No. Children are welcome to participate in a Compassion project regardless of their faith. Compassion’s program, however, is unapologetically Christian and every Compassion project is connected to a Christian church or ministry. We want children to have the opportunity to see living faith in action, hear the gospel and be discipled in the ways of Christ. But neither they nor their families are under any compulsion to become Christians.

A Message From Wess Stafford Of Compassion International To You

Haitian Children and Families Devastated by Massive Earthquake

The catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti yesterday has resulted in unfathomable chaos and devastation for hundreds of thousands of children and families.

Compassion sponsors and donors serve more than 65,000 children in Haiti. At least a third of them live in the areas that were hardest hit.

I am asking you to please send a generous gift today to help precious children and their families.

We are working rapidly to assess the situation and determine the full extent of damage:

  • Sadly, we anticipate there will be many deaths.
  • We anticipate thousands of children and families will have lost everything.
  • We anticipate many of our church-based child development centers will have been destroyed.

Without a doubt, the children we serve in Haiti are in shock and face immediate needs for food, water, medical care, shelter and counseling. We have teams prepared to respond, and we are deeply committed to helping each child.

We need your donation today. Please reach out in the name of Jesus to bring relief, comfort, love and restoration to precious children and families whose lives have been devastated by this crisis.

Thank you for caring,

Dr. Wess Stafford
President Compassion International

“Drink Coffee. Do Good.” The best coffee for the soul!

20788114

Over the past few days at GMA’s IMMERSE week, I’ve found a bit of heaven downstairs in the green room backstage.  It is called “coffee”.  No, I’m not crazy – I’ve had plenty of coffee before in my life…but never this coffee.  This coffee is from Rwanda and comes with quite a compelling story.

Land of a Thousand Hills has transformed the simple act of drinking coffee into an opportunity to make a difference. “Drink Coffee. Do Good” it’s that easy. We invite you to lead the way and help break the chains that once bound thousands of Rwandan farmers, and allow them to enjoy the life that God meant for us. You are making the choice to bless a people that want to move forward in life and faith and if you like great coffee, you’ll love this ministry.

Land of a Thousand Hills helps ease the wounds from the 1994 genocide that took place in Rwanda and devastated the economics of the community as well.  They do this by helping a community of farmers become empowered to plant and harvest coffee – and then pay them more than triple the amount normally paid for their export.  The beans are then sent to the small ministry-focused company in Atlanta, Georgia where it is roasted, packaged, and distributed world-wide.  Through this process, Land of a Thousand Hills injects about $3.00 per bag of coffee sold back into the small coffee community in Rwanda – and invests more hope into a community with such a history of pain and tribulation.

Their slogan says it all:

Drink Coffee.  Do good.

I’m proud to have meet these ladies from Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee and heard their story.  I am proud to have let their amazing brews wake me up and keep me going each day – just as they keep the Rwandans in one small coffee-farming community going and living post-genocide each day!

Interested in learning more or ordering coffee?  You can do both online at www.DrinkCoffeeDoGood.com .  They are able of supplying churches, business, homes, and more)1
