GMA’s IMMERSE 2010

immerse2010 copy

One of the largest events that we got worship? Media is a part of each year is the Gospel Music Association’s IMMERSE event.  We are happy to have been selected by our peers last year as the "Official Blog of GMA IMMERSE" and have been asked to be the official blog by GMA for yet another year.  We couldn’t be more thrilled.

Why?  Perfect question….and it comes with the perfect answer.

"If there is any one event for aspiring Christian artists, songwriters, and worship leaders to attend each year…this is it.  I believe in this event 100%."

It doesn’t get much simpler than that…but I will be happier to expound.  You see, in the business that I have, in essence, fallen into over the years – there is no shortage of conferences and events.  Many of them look great up front…but you don’t have to look to hard to see what the main focus is…and most of the time it comes down to money.

Can I be frank with you?  I have been blessed with the opportunity to work alongside of the folks at GMA for the better part of two years.  They are 100% percent genuine…and they, in turn, believe in you.  They believe in everything that you, as a part of Christian and Gospel Music stand for.  I’ve seen them in the trenches…and I have seen them paving the way.

Through IMMERSE (formerly GMA In The Rockies), the GMA has helped pave the way for many artists.  Their competitions have seen names rise to the top such as Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, Matthew West, Jars of Clay, Nichole Nordeman, Bart Millard (MercyMe), Barlow Girl, Stacie Orrico, Point of Grace, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Chris Sligh and 2007 American Idol winner Jordin Sparks.  Big names? You bet…and they all started at the same level you may be at today.  Ask any of them, today, to what level of esteem they hold GMA.

It is no surprise that when money shortfalls started creeping into the GMA camp, most of the names you read above joined together for a the "Concert of The Decade" to help raise money for the GMA and keep events like IMMERSE alive.  I was honored to be a part of the event an even more honored to be able to work alongside the folks at GMA.  Their hearts and their passion is to advance our music.

What Is Your Passion?

Do you have interest in Christian and Gospel music?  Perhaps you are a songwriter? Maybe you are an artist?  Do you lead worship?  If you can answer "yes" to any of those questions…then you are a perfect fit for IMMERSE.  By attending IMMERSE, I can personally guarantee that you will be placed face to face with some of the best minds in Christian and Gospel music…minds that don’t mind being picked for all of their info!

INDIANAPOLIS’ JAKE BROTHERS WINS AT GOSPEL MUSIC ASSOCIATION NATIONAL TALENT COMPETITION IN NASHVILLE

clip_image001NASHVILLE, Tenn. – August 7, 2009 – Artist/Songwriter Jake Brothers from Indianapolis was among several aspiring artists and songwriters who were celebrated by music industry executives and leaders after winning multiple honors at the GMA Artist and Song of 2009 National Competition held last week in Nashville during GMA IMMERSE (www.experienceimmerse.com), the Christian music industry’s premier training experience and talent competition.

The GMA Academy Artist & Song of 2009 National Competition is the Christian and gospel music community’s premier talent competition for unsigned artists and songwriters that has in recent years seen entrants like Chris Tomlin, Matthew West, Nichole Nordeman, BarlowGirl and American Idol 2007 winner Jordin Sparks go on to successful music careers.  Fellow American Idol finalist and another former GMA competition winner Chris Sligh hosted this year’s competition finals.  (To watch the Artist Finals which was broadcast live at GodBeat.com, visit http://godbeat.com/godbeat-news/live-broadcast-of-immerse-finals.)

Hundreds of artist and songwriting contestants from all over the United States and Canada competed for grand prizes which included a record development deal with Centricity Music, a “Disney Best of Show” award and performance slot at Night of Joy at Walt Disney World and a Compassion International ministry trip.  Also at stake were GMA’s grand prize titles for Artist and Song 2009 and American Bible Society’s ABS Scripture Song Awards which offered a chance for the winning songs produced by a major Christian music recording label.

At the conclusion of the four-day competition held in conjunction with GMA IMMERSE, Jake Brothers, from Indianapolis, Ind., who performed as both as solo artist and as the Jake Brothers Band and won in both cases.  Jake Brothers Band was chosen as GMA’s Band winner.  As a solo artist, Brothers was runner up to Jared Salte of Brad Ross, Talent Booking Director, Walt Disney Entertainment; John Horton, Mktg & Business Development Dir, Walt Disney Park & Resorts Sales and Travel Industry Marketing; Jake Brothers; John W. Styll, president & CEO of GMAAlberta, Canada in GMA’s Artist Solo 2009 for contestants in the age category 25 and up.  He was also the recipient of GMA’s “Disney’s Night of Joy Best of Show Award,” which means Brothers will perform at Night of Joy at Walt Disney World, one of the top Christian music events in the country.  Brothers will receive a performance slot at the  "Night of Joy” event at the Walt Disney World® Resort, September 11-12, 2009 in Florida, performing on the same stage as Jars of Clay, Chris Tomlin, P.O.D., Superchick, Newsboys, Kutless, Leeland and Flyleaf. The prize also includes a vacation package at Disney World.

Shelly E. Johnson was named GMA’s Artist Solo 2009 for contestants in the 13-24 age category.  Centricity Music (www.centricitymusic.com) also chose 24-year-old Johnson to receive its recording development deal.  Centricity Music, an independent label distributed worldwide by Word Distribution and whose artists include Downhere, Andrew Peterson, Circleslide (previous GMA winner), and Jaime Jamgochian.  Johnson’s deal with Centricity will include music and career advice and council, song consultation, demo recordings, and the potential for expansion into an exclusive recording or publishing contract.   This was Johnson’s second year in the GMA competition.  In 2008, she won songwriting awards which included GMA Song of 2008 for “The Power of the Cross,” the song she performed at the Artist Finals this year.

Holly Starr, from Quincy, Wash., was recognized for the ministry emphasis of her music by Compassion International (www.compassion.com), a Christian child advocacy organization which helps more than one million children in 24 countries.  Compassion named her their recipient of the Music & Ministry Experience, an all-expense paid ministry trip to a Compassion International destination.

The Gospel Music Channel (www.gospelmusicchannel.com), the 24-hour, all music entertainment network devoted to the uplifting, inspiring and diverse music that is Gospel, was a competition sponsor for the first time this year, choosing Worship Jazz band TC Carter and the Musical Sensations from Martinsville, Va., as its winner.  TC Carter will appear on GMC’s “Joyful Noise,” hosted by Christine Pullara and be featured with its own artist page on GospelMusicChannel.com.

In addition to these artists, winners were also honored in several categories defined by musical style and/or age. These winners, too, receive prizes including personal consultation meetings with music industry executives, free tuition to future GMA events, and several other product prizes. “In Christ Alone” : Day 3 of IMMERSE.

aaron shust There’s a little different title for tonight’s post for a totally different reason:  IT HIT ME – and it hit me like a ton of bricks.  We’ve had a blast so far at IMMERSE – and there has been much to talk about.  Today was no different.  From more competitions, critiques and networking – to an awesome night of acoustic music from some awesome songwriters.  IMMERSE continues to prove itself to be a worthwhile event.

Still – it all  boiled down to one moment.  Don Koch fired up the baby grand on stage with a song that, as he puts it, “sat on a shelf for five years.”  Koch continued to explain the song’s initial failure by adding that “absolutely no one wanted it.”  Then, he sang the first line.  That song : “In Christ Alone”.  I sat there (stood, rather, from the wings) and literally cried over lyrics I have heard time and time again.  The song hit me like a ton of bricks.  It was true…it was current…it was what I needed to remind me.

Stop for a minute.  Think about what you are doing.  Right now, you may have a song that has spun its wheels for five years – or longer. You may have written a song that will sit for five years that you just wrote last night.  Who knows if, one day, that song will touch thousands…or even one.  The point of the matter is – God placed that song on your lips, in your heart, and on to paper for a reason.  Please – don’t ever forget that, as writers of Christian music – we are ministering to others.

More to come – but back to the wings I must go.  Aaron Shust is singing “My Savior My God.”

God…is GOOD!

Day 2 of IMMERSE

Day two of IMMERSE has drawn to a close and has been beautiful from start to finish.  The morning opened with worship from Travis Cottrell and some words of inspiration from Michael W. Smith.  (For the record, worship is beautiful and very vertical with a body of believers who are involved intimately with worship and Christian music.)

After worship, many took the opportunity to take a Music City Tour and learned the ropes of Music Row while others engaged in preparation for performances, critiques, and reviews.  I got a chance to grab lunch in the Curb Cafe and catch some of the performers.  Let me tell you – we have talent in this group.  I had an awesome time meeting many of you, giving opinions to some of you who asked for a quick critique of a song (I’ll always give you my ear when I’m available – so don’t be afraid to ask or email me.) and even took the honor of being able to pray for many of you and for your future in the music business.  (Thanks also for the prayers in return.)

0730091714aThe afternoon was spent with a Speed Networking session.  Our aspiring writers, artists, and future Music Row moguls had the chance to speak with those in-the-know in the music business.  Producers, A&R Reps, artist management agencies and more gave out valuable information to the IMMERSE-ers in a once-in-a-lifetime fashion.

Then, there were the fun times – Leeland showed off their skills with Guitar Praise at the Godbeat.com booth.

While their modest combined (keyword…don’t miss that, Jake!) score of just over 400,000 points was great…they barely touched my single score…
0730091634a
Sadly, Leeland declined my offer to open for him as a Guitar Praise soloist.
(I’ll digress…)
0730091849aLeeland had bigger fish to fry – namely the night concert.  We got a chance to catch up with Leeland and Sir Smitty backstage in the green room before the show (and even had the hilarious opportunity to sing some Richard Marx [accurate lyrics were a bit optional] while Leeland provided the baby-grand backing)
I’ll be sure and post some of your pics from day two tomorrow.  Meanwhile….engage yourself in this:
I have three trivia questions for you:
  1. Where was Michael W. Smith’s FIRST job as a writer?
  2. What was the name of the record label Smitty opened in 1996?
  3. What was that label named after?
Leave a comment on the blog with the answers to all three questions.  The first one with the right answer to all three will get a free copy of Pure Praise.  (Find me in the morning to redeem)  NOTE:  I will not post the comments until the morning….so don’t assume you aren’t the first…or that you are!
